A Lesson on Binding and Loosing
In Matthew chapter 16 verse 18 Jesus said the gates of Hell will not prevail against the church.
This means the demonic powers of hell will not predominate or overcome the church.
Now that’s good news for the church for in one verse Jesus declared that hells plots, strategies and schemes will not succeed against the church.
William Barclay says, “The function of gates is to keep things in, to confine them, shut them up, control them.
As we survey what’s going on around the world it appears that the gates of hell are indeed functioning.
Since Jesus said the gates of hell will not prevail agains the church what should we do.
He gave the answer in verse 19 when He said, “I give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatsoever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
First notice He said “Whatsoever” Whatever includes, who, what, that, which.” (Strong’s Greek and Hebrew Dictionary)
It is our job to pray that God’s kingdom (his will) will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Remembering that the kingdom doesn’t come with observation it is within us. The kingdom is here within us and manifested outwardly as we declare and decree the will of the king.
William Barclay says “to loose and to bind were common Jewish phrases meaning to allow or forbid.”
The word bind comes from a word meaning to stop, hold back, restrain.
We restrain the powers of hell with prayer.
We are instructed to pray because if we don’t pray we will enter into temptation. Temptation means testings and trials. (Strongs Greek and Hebrew Dictionary)
We enter into trials and testings that aren’t from God simply because we fail to pray.
We are called to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
To pray without ceasing reminds us to be sober and vigilant because our adversary the devil, as a roaring lion walks about seeking whom he may devour. (1 Peter 5:8)
If we don’t pray we become prey. Prayer is Essential!
Jesus mentions Binding and Loosing again in Matthew chapter 18 as He discusses the power of touching and agreeing in prayer. When we pray with others even if it’s only two or three people, He is in the midst, to ANSWER our PRAYERS!
Yes, it is time to major in Christian fundamentals. Asking in faith and speaking to Mountains (difficult problems).
“Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive (Matthew 21:21-22).
Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you
We must use the power and authority Jesus gave us to overcome ALL the tactics lodged against us in this hour.
Luke 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
